Benzalkonium Chloride for Food & Beverage CIP / COP Sanitation

Benzalkonium Chloride (BKC) is a no-rinse food-contact sanitiser used in dairy plants, breweries, soft-drink bottlers and meat/poultry processors for clean-in-place (CIP) and clean-out-of-place (COP) cycles. Food-contact limits and efficacy

For no-rinse food-contact surfaces, BKC is approved up to 200 ppm active quat under FDA 21 CFR 178.1010 — do not exceed this. Non-food-contact zones (drains, walls, equipment exteriors) typically use 1,000–2,000 ppm. BKC is effective against the main food pathogens: Listeria monocytogenes, Salmonella, E. coli O157:H7 and Pseudomonas spp.

Use in CIP sequences

BKC sanitising is applied after the alkaline (caustic) and acid CIP steps, commonly at 60–70 °C. It is compatible with typical alkaline CIP chemistries when dosed as a separate sanitising step. Blenders formulate from BKC 80% concentrate; verify hardness tolerance and use soft/demineralised water to maintain activity.
