What Is Benzalkonium Chloride 50% (BKC 50%) Used For? Applications & Dosage by Industry

Benzalkonium Chloride 50% (BKC 50%) is used at 0.05%–0.4% active quat across healthcare, food & beverage, personal care, water treatment, agriculture and industrial sectors as a disinfectant, sanitiser, algicide and preservative. Use the dosage ranges below as a starting point — always confirm efficacy in your specific formulation and against applicable regulations.

Hospital, clinical, and pharmaceutical surface disinfection

BKC 50% is the global formulation reference standard for hospital surface disinfectants. The cationic ADBAC active binds to negatively charged microbial membranes, disrupts the lipid bilayer, and inactivates gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria, fungi, yeasts, and enveloped viruses (including coronaviruses, influenza, and HIV). It is the active substance in most quaternary-ammonium-based hospital surface sanitisers worldwide and is included in the US EPA's List N of disinfectants for use against SARS-CoV-2.

  • Typical in-use concentration: 0.1% – 0.4% active quat (1,000 – 4,000 ppm) for hospital hard-surface disinfection
  • Validated efficacy under EN 1276 (bactericidal), EN 1650 (fungicidal), EN 14476 (virucidal)
  • Compatible with nonionic surfactants (alcohol ethoxylates, APGs) and amphoteric betaines for cleaning-disinfectant blends
  • Effective at room temperature; no rinse-off required for non-food-contact surfaces (per local regulations)
  • Used as active in EPA-registered hospital, healthcare, and clinical surface sanitisers worldwide

Food and beverage industry CIP / COP sanitation

BKC is approved as a no-rinse food-contact surface sanitiser under FDA 21 CFR 178.1010 at concentrations up to 200 ppm active quat. Cooling tower, HVAC, and industrial water-treatment biocide

BKC 50% controls Legionella pneumophila, sulphate-reducing bacteria (SRB), and biofilm in industrial cooling towers, HVAC chillers, and recirculating water systems. Slug-dose or shock-treatment programs at 50 – 200 ppm active quat are widely used in hospital HVAC systems, datacenter chillers, food-plant cooling, and oilfield produced-water injection systems. Biofilm-disrupting activity also helps preserve heat-exchanger performance and reduces microbially-influenced corrosion (MIC).

  • Cooling-tower slug dose: 50 – 100 ppm active quat for routine biological control
  • Shock dose: 100 – 200 ppm for biofilm disruption and Legionella control (HSE ACOP L8)
  • Effective against gram-negative bacteria (Pseudomonas, Legionella, Enterobacter)
  • Compatible with most cooling-water programs (phosphonate / polyacrylate dispersants)

Agricultural, veterinary, and wood-preservation applications

BKC 50% is the cornerstone biocide active in agricultural and veterinary disinfection — poultry house pre-stocking decontamination, dairy farm udder hygiene, hatchery foot-baths, greenhouse soil-bed sterilisation, and equipment sanitisation. Wood preservation applications include surface-mildew control, log preservation, and outdoor furniture treatment against fungal decay. Also widely used as a textile antimicrobial finish on hospital scrubs, sportswear, and military uniforms.

  • Poultry / dairy disinfection: 0.2% – 0.5% active quat (1:100 to 1:250 dilution from 50%)
  • Foot-bath disinfection: 0.5% – 1.0% active quat for biosecurity zones
  • Wood preservation: 0.5% – 2% active quat applied as surface-spray or pressure-treatment carrier

Frequently Asked Questions

What is Benzalkonium Chloride 50% (BKC 50%) and how does it work as a disinfectant?+
Benzalkonium Chloride 50% is a 50% aqueous solution of Alkyl Dimethyl Benzyl Ammonium Chloride (ADBAC, CAS 8001-54-5) — a cationic surfactant and quaternary ammonium biocide. The positively charged quat head binds to the negatively charged outer membrane of bacteria, fungi, and enveloped viruses, disrupts the membrane, leaks intracellular contents, and inactivates the cell. This mechanism makes BKC effective against gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria, yeasts, moulds, algae, and enveloped viruses (including coronaviruses, influenza, herpes, HIV).
Is BKC 50% effective against coronavirus and SARS-CoV-2?+
Yes. The US EPA's List N (Disinfectants for Use Against SARS-CoV-2) includes many BKC-based products at active concentrations between 0.1% and 0.4%. BKC inactivates enveloped viruses (SARS-CoV-2, MERS-CoV, influenza, herpes simplex, HIV) by disrupting the lipid bilayer envelope. Contact times typically range 1–10 minutes depending on the formulation, surface, and target organism. Always validate efficacy against the specific virus and surface for your intended use, and follow the registered product label.
What is the recommended use concentration of BKC 50% for surface disinfection?+
Typical in-use concentration is 0.1%–0.4% active quat (1,000–4,000 ppm). Dilute 1 part BKC 50% in 125–500 parts water (yields 0.1%–0.4% active). For routine hospital and clinical hard-surface sanitation, 0.2% (2,000 ppm) is the global benchmark. For food-contact no-rinse sanitisers, US FDA 21 CFR 178.1010 limits use to 200 ppm active quat (dilute 1 part BKC 50% in ~2,500 parts water). Always validate efficacy against target organisms with EN 1276 / EN 14476 / AOAC use-dilution test methods.
What is the difference between BKC 50% and BKC 80%?+
BKC 50% and BKC 80% contain the same active substance (ADBAC, CAS 8001-54-5) at different concentrations in water — 50% versus 80% active matter. BKC 50% is the global formulation reference standard: lower viscosity, easier to pump and dose at room temperature, the grade specified in most disinfectant formulation manuals. BKC 80% is the export-economical concentrate: 60% more active matter per kilogram shipped (significant freight saving for ocean exports), but more viscous and may gel below 15°C, so sanitiser blenders typically dilute 80% to 50% on-site before formulation.
Is BKC 50% compatible with anionic surfactants like LABSA, SLES, or SCS/SXS hydrotropes?+
BKC 50% is generally incompatible with anionic surfactants — including LABSA, SLES, SLS, sodium cumene sulfonate (SCS), sodium xylene sulfonate (SXS), and most soap-based systems — because BKC is a cationic surfactant. Mixing forms an insoluble ion-pair complex that precipitates out of solution and destroys both biocidal activity and detergency. BKC IS compatible with nonionic surfactants (alcohol ethoxylates, APGs, Tween series), amphoteric surfactants (cocamidopropyl betaine when pH > IEP), and other cationic/quat systems.
What grades of BKC 50% does Vasudev Chemo Pharma manufacture?+
Vasudev Chemo Pharma supplies BKC 50% in three grades: (1) Industrial / Technical Grade for cleaning concentrates, water treatment, and oilfield biocide; (2) Cosmetic Grade (CTFA-compliant, INCI: Benzalkonium Chloride) for hair conditioners, shampoos, mouthwashes, and leave-on personal-care products; (3) Disinfectant Grade suitable for EPA-registered formulators producing hospital, food-contact, and pharmaceutical surface sanitisers. All grades are produced at our ISO 9001:2015, GMP, and Halal certified facility in Gujarat, India.
Is BKC 50% safe for skin contact in cosmetic formulations?+
BKC is approved as a cosmetic preservative by major regulatory bodies (CTFA / Cosmetics Europe / IFRA) at use concentrations up to 0.1% (rinse-off) and up to 0.05% (leave-on) in personal-care products. Above these limits, BKC can cause skin sensitisation, irritation, and contact dermatitis. The neat 50% concentrate is corrosive (GHS05) and must NEVER contact skin or eyes directly. Always formulate within recommended cosmetic-use limits and conduct in-vitro skin compatibility testing before commercial launch.
Can BKC 50% be used to disinfect swimming pools and spa water?+
BKC 50% is an effective algicide and supplementary sanitiser for residential and commercial swimming pools, spas, and recreational water. Typical dose: 5–15 ppm active quat (10–30 ml of BKC 50% per 1,000 litres of pool water) as a weekly preventive against algae bloom. BKC works synergistically with chlorine-based primary disinfectants and at slightly elevated pH where chlorine alone is less effective. It is non-foaming at recommended pool concentrations and does not affect pH significantly. Always follow local pool water regulations.
What is the storage and shelf life of BKC 50%?+
BKC 50% has a guaranteed shelf life of 24 months in original sealed HDPE drums when stored between 5°C and 40°C, away from direct sunlight, in a well-ventilated warehouse. It is non-flammable (flash point > 100°C). Avoid contact with anionic surfactants, chlorine bleach concentrate, and strong oxidisers during storage. Do not store in metal containers (especially aluminium) — BKC is corrosive to bare metal at concentrations > 10%. The product remains stable and does not lose potency over the shelf life when stored correctly.
Is BKC 50% Halal-certified and Kosher-certified?+
Vasudev Chemo Pharma's BKC 50% is Halal-certified by a recognised Indian Halal certification body, with the certificate provided with each shipment on request — important for export to UAE, Saudi Arabia, Malaysia, Indonesia, and other Muslim-majority markets. Kosher certification is available on request for buyers serving the Israeli and US Jewish-market food sanitation segments. Our manufacturing facility is also GMP certified for cosmetic and pharmaceutical-grade production, and ISO 9001:2015 certified for quality management.
What documentation is provided with BKC 50% shipments?+
Every shipment of BKC 50% includes: (1) batch-specific Certificate of Analysis (COA) with active content, pH, free amine, alkyl distribution, and heavy metals; (2) GHS-compliant Safety Data Sheet (SDS) in English and (on request) the destination-country language; (3) Technical Data Sheet (TDS) with formulation guidance; (4) Halal certificate (on request); (5) GMP certificate (on request for cosmetic/pharma buyers); (6) Commercial invoice, packing list, and customs paperwork with HS code 29239000 for international export.
Where does Vasudev Chemo Pharma export BKC 50%?+
