Benzalkonium Chloride as an Oilfield & Produced-Water Biocide

Dosing and role

In produced-water and injection systems BKC is dosed at ~50–200 ppm active quat depending on bacterial load and system volume, applied as batch/slug treatment or continuous injection. It controls SRB and general aerobic/anaerobic bacteria, helping limit reservoir souring, biofilm and MIC in flowlines and injection wells.

Formulation

Oilfield-chemical companies formulate injection biocides at ~10%–40% BKC (from 80% concentrate). BKC is often alternated with other biocide chemistries for resistance management; confirm compatibility with corrosion inhibitors and scale inhibitors, and avoid anionic co-additives.
