Benzalkonium Chloride as a Phase-Transfer Catalyst

How it works

As a PTC, the lipophilic quaternary ammonium cation ferries anionic reactants across the aqueous–organic interface, accelerating reactions such as nucleophilic substitutions, O-/N-alkylations, oxidations and eliminations in biphasic systems. This can improve rate, yield and selectivity while allowing milder conditions.

Typical loadings and grade

PTC applications typically use ~1%–10% BKC relative to substrate, adjusted empirically. Technical-grade BKC (50% or 80%) is used; the concentrate reduces water introduced to moisture-sensitive systems. Confirm compatibility with your solvent system and downstream work-up/purification.
